Sun in a summer heatwave

When Cornwall turns up the heat, there’s no better place to be! With golden beaches, shimmering seas, and lush countryside, a Cornish heatwave is pure holiday magic. If you’re lucky enough to be staying in one of our cottages while the sun is blazing, here are some top tips to keep cool, make memories, and enjoy every last ray.

🌊 Hit the Beach Early (or Late!)

The best way to beat the midday sun? Start your day with an early dip or a morning beach stroll. Whether it’s the wide sands of Polzeath, the turquoise shallows of Porthcurno, or a tucked-away cove near you, Cornwall’s coastline comes into its own in the sunshine. Later on, head back for a golden hour paddle or even a sunset picnic.

🍦Cool Off with a Proper Cornish Ice Cream

No heatwave is complete without a scoop (or two). Seek out a local ice cream parlour – you’ll find clotted cream flavours, dreamy sorbets, and seaside classics like bubblegum or honeycomb. Look out for Roskilly’s, Callestick Farm, or Treleavens if you’re near one of their stockists.

🚤 Take to the Water

From paddleboarding and kayaking to sea safaris and boat trips, there’s no better way to stay cool than out on the water. Many beaches offer watersports hire, or you can take a river cruise from places like Fowey or the Helford Estuary for a more relaxing option.

🌿 Hide Away in a Shady Garden

Not feeling the beach? Escape the heat under the trees at The Lost Gardens of Heligan or Trelissick. These tranquil spots offer dappled shade, cool woodland walks, and (importantly) cafés with cold drinks and cream teas.

🧺 Picnic Like a Pro

Grab some local goodies from a farm shop or deli and make for the coast or countryside. Many of our cottages come with picnic hampers and cool bags to help you dine al fresco in style. Don’t forget the sunhat!

🕶️ Stay Close and Chill

Of course, one of the best things to do in a heatwave is… not much at all. Pull up a deckchair, pour a cold drink, and relax by the pool with a book and a breeze. After all, you’re on holiday.

Wherever you wander, stay sun safe – pack water, suncream, a hat, and take breaks in the shade. Heatwaves in Cornwall are rare treats, and with a little planning, you’ll enjoy every sun-soaked second.
