There are so many brilliant and different day trips from Coombe Farm Cottages, it is hard to choose which to do…here are four that come highly recommended:
Tintagel
Tintagel, the fabled birthplace of King Arthur is a fabulous day out for all ages. With so much to explore from the heady heights of the castle, to the depths of Merlin’s Cave, this town is popular and unique. King Arthur is the legendary leader of the late fifth and early 6th centuries. Medieval histories believe he led the defence of Britain against the Saxon invasion, and you can certainly not imagine a better place from which to do this than at Tintagel. The town itself is well worth exploring and is home to many other attractions. It also has some more unusual shops, restaurants and lots of places, of course, to sample a tasty pasty. The castle is well worth a visit, and is best described as “a bit of a fixer-upper”. The views are stunning on a good day.
Boscastle
Known in Cornish as Kastel Boterel, after the 12th century fortress Botreaux Castle (of which sadly not much survives), Boscastle is great for a day trip. Fully improved since the famous flood of 2004 Boscastle has bounced back bigger and better. Walk out over the bridge and along the river, a great place for a bit of crabbing. At the end the old Port for some amazing sea views (look out for seals bobbing about), follow the coastal path from here if you fancy a walk. Climb the rocks, but mind the steep drops. Keep an eye out for smugglers!
Port Isaac
A busy coastal port from the Middle Ages to mid nineteenth century, this beautiful cliff side town is now most famous as the home of TV favourite, Doc Martin. It is lovely to wander through the shops and cafes down the steep, narrow streets to the Port itself. Due to it’s steepness the coastal views are breathtaking. The port is still home to many fishing boats, and lots of yummy fish is served in the town. If you fancy a treat celebrity chef Nathan Outlaw has a place there that looks fab.
Launceston
The rural market town of Launceston with it’s imposing castle high on the hill is home to attractions, markets, shops and arts and crafts. Famous for it’s architecture, narrow lanes & alleys Launceston is also home to Castle Street, which Sir John Betjeman referred to as “the most perfect collection of 18th century town houses in Cornwall. This former capital of Cornwall is a great place to explore, and then sample a pasty or a cream tea, jam first of course (the true Cornish way!).
