The first thing to say about beaches is – you will have our large heated outdoor swimming pool on your doorstep, so you don’t need to go far just to relax, sunbathe and swim. But you’ll probably want to visit beaches too. Cornwall offers over a hundred beaches, with the water and air temperatures raised by the Gulf Stream. Between them they offer all the beach activities you could want – sandy beaches for sunbathing and sandcastles, rock pools as the tide goes out, and the UK’s best surfing, with lessons, and equipment hire if required, on most beaches. Many of the beaches are dog friendly, and the coastal paths above the beaches provide stunning views. In no particular order, here are our top five beaches:

1. Widemouth Bay

A huge sandy beach with large areas of rock to the south and north of the beach. Part of the beach is popular with surfers, lifeguards are on duty in the summer. Two car parks and facilities are right by the beach. Dogs allowed on the south end of the beach all year. You can always get onto this beach even when the tide is in.

2. Trebarwith Strand

A long sandy beach popular with families and surfers. Facilities include a beach shop for those all-important ice-creams, café, and pub looking over the bay, plus two car parks. Dogs are allowed all year. When the tide is out this beach is difficult to beat. The rock formations, rock pools and large caves (think smugglers!) are amazing.

3. Crackington Haven

A popular beach with patches of sand, stunning rock formations and rock pools at low tide. A small car park and facilities are close to the beach. There are excellent views from the nearby 400 foot cliffs at St. Gennys. Dogs allowed only out of season (October to April)

4. Summerleaze Beach at Bude

One of several beaches at Bude, Summerleaze is an excellent sandy beach with a tidal swimming pool. Summerleaze has the unique appeal of the river, with its bobbing sailing boats and the impressive breakwater, making the beach popular with families and surfers. There are shops and cafes in Bude, and pleasant walks along the Bude Canal. There is a large car park nearby, and beach lifeguards in summer. Dogs are allowed on Summerleaze Beach all year, though they must be on leads May-Sept.

5. Daymer Bay Beach at Rock

This is a stunning beach that at low tide forms long stretches of golden sand backed by dunes all the way from Daymer Bay to Rock with superb views across the Camel Estuary. Access is a short walk down a set of steps from the carpark. Dog friendly. Café, shop and toilets are all near the car park. A personal favourite of ours. You can catch the ferry from Rock (5 mins away) over to Padstow.

6. Millock Haven

This beach definitely comes in the wild, unspoilt and rugged category. If you turn left on the coast road from Widemouth Bay and take the (at times, pretty narrow and steep) road you will end up at Millock Haven. There are no facitlities and no car park, and this is why it’s a great place to go if you want to avoid the crowds. It’s rocky, stony and the zigzag geology of the cliffs is amazing. Dog friendly all year.
